How do you get the footnotes of a word document to transfer into Microsoft publisher?

I am trying to import my dissertation into Microsoft Publisher (Microsoft Office 2003) into the import word document. It workd fine but does not transfer the footnotes. How do I get them to go across to?How do you get the footnotes of a word document to transfer into Microsoft publisher?
you need to show the header/footer in word and use copy and paste - this import wizard can't do this automatically
