What are footnotes and endnotes and how do you do them?

I am writing a paper for the first time with them in it and I was wondering what they should contain and where they go. Thanks so much for your help. What are footnotes and endnotes and how do you do them?
Footnotes are notes that appear at the bottom (or “foot”) of the page. The writer refers the reader to footnotes by placing numbers at the ends of sentences, like this.1 or this.2 The number refers the reader to the bottom of the page, or to a separate page at the end of your paper, where the writer (you) explains the sentence above, or gives more information, or tells the reader where you got the information in the sentence. End notes work the same way, but they are put at the end of a sentence in parentheses (like this). The end notes refer the reader to a separate sheet at the end of your paper. For example, if your paper used information from a book by someone named Jones, you would record the information about that book on the end notes page of your paper, and every time you used something from the Jones book in your paper you would place an end note at the end of that sentence, like this (Jones, p. 34.)

These things can get pretty specific, and if you do it wrong you'll at the lease lose points on your paper and at the worst you can be accused of plagiarizing.

You need to find out the format your teacher expects. He or she should have done one of the following things: handed out a ';style guide'; that describes the exact way to do it, or referred you to the particular reference book that describes the process. Ask your teacher next time you meet what format he/she expects and where to get the information to do this the right way. Good luck. What are footnotes and endnotes and how do you do them?
About footnotes and endnotes

Footnotes and endnotes are used in printed documents to explain, comment on, or provide references for text in a document. You might use footnotes for detailed comments and endnotes for citation of sources.

A footnote or an endnote consists of two linked parts — the note reference mark (note reference mark: A number, character, or combination of characters that indicates that additional information is contained in a footnote or endnote.) and the corresponding note text.

You can add note text of any length and format note text just as you would any other text. You can customize note separators, the lines that separate the document text from the note text.

*Go to the tab Insert on a Word Doc then go under Reference click on footnote and you will see ur options.
