Footnotes indicate the source of ideas and facts which are not original to you, and are not considered ';common knowledge.'; You don't have to give a source for ';Columbus made his first voyage in 1492'; but you need to cite where you got the info that ';the men of Columbus's company were eager to rape and steal from the people they encountered.';


Even if there are only two sources, you must indicate the origin of each concept or fact you take from either source.


I disagree with Smith (p. 42) that the journey is more important than the destination, and Jones (p. 86) ridicules the notion. In my opinion, the destination is the only thing that matters.Is it necessary to include footnotes in addition to a works cited list in my paper if only 2 sources are used?
