What are footnotes when doing a research paper?

It says on the rubric that ';The paper has to be typed with footnotes and bibliography';

I obviously know what a bibliography is, but have absolutely no idea what a footnote is. And our teacher didn't explain how to do it, so I am really confused. This is 8-10 page historical essay, by the way. I am in the 11th grade.What are footnotes when doing a research paper?
footnotes is liek a cooment or statement at the bottom of a page in like a book or essay that comments on a cite or reference used in the essay. the footnote is flagged by a superscript number on the top of the sentence.

ex.: In '; the picture of Dorian Gray'; Lord henry asks his cousin Gladys

'; In the Parthinian matter? * (uses an asterick instead of a number)

then at the bottom of the page it explains what he means

* following the technique of ancient peoples of the Near East who ,in battle would make a false retreat on horseback then shoot arrows at their unsuspecting opponenents'; ( that was the footnote)

i hope i was helpful enough 2 get best answer.
