Is it acceptable based on literary standards to insert footnotes in the introduction of a book?

Working the footnoted matter into the body of the paragraph would take way from the author's intended train of thought.Is it acceptable based on literary standards to insert footnotes in the introduction of a book?
I would try to persuade you not to put it in the introdution, at least put it at the end of the book.
