when you're in your later years of high school (years 11 and 12) they expect you to be clear with your references. Depends on the subject, but it's always important to reference your sources. Ive just started university and they dislike footnotes, they expect you to use a referencing system called APA which is a tad more difficult. If you are in high school I'd ask your teacher. When exactly is it best to use a footnote for an essay?
It is often used as a place for you to give credit to a source where you are quoting from or using information from. Also, it is the perfect place to add extra, interesting information about what you are writing - without taking away the importance of what you were originally writing.
usually a foot note has a little number next to it, like you would see in math when a number is squared or something. that number will have an explanation at the bottom of the page and could be explaining a quote, or where you got your information.. something along those lines. :)
You should also use a footnote when you are referring to another author's you are plagiarising the best thing to do is to insert a footnote
