When do you use endnote/footnote?

I need to use endnote or footnote and I was wondering when you use it.

Do you only use it when you are writing something directly from the source?

Do you use it everytime you state a fact?

(Like, Barney is a purple dinosaur 1.)?

If you do, then won;t that mean you have to cite just about every sentence??

Please help and I would like it if you procided a link, but it's not necessary. When do you use endnote/footnote?
An endnote or footnote is used when you are quoting something directly from a source and you need to site it in your essay. You can also use footnotes and endnotes to add to a sentence when the information you want to add is not very relevant. For example, if you mention a person by name, you may want to use a footnote or endnote to add something that you think should be noted but does not necessarily need to be added to the essay.

I hope this is a help!
