When do you use a footnote?

I'm not sure if I should put a footnote after I cite a specific date, fact, or number. I know I need to use one whenever I directly quote someone. Should I still use it for facts too?

Please help!

thank you! When do you use a footnote?
A footnote is useful to expand on a statement or fact

where it might be necessary for some readers without

interrupting the flow of your argument.

Sources for numbers or quotes, and additional supports for opinions are good examples.

Sometimes you might place an interesting digression

in a footnote.
