Can you add a footnote without it being replicated in each page of a word document?

I'm trying to add footnotes to reference sources in an essay so I need the same header and different footnotes on different pages of the same Microsoft word document. Can you add a footnote without it being replicated in each page of a word document?
There's a way to get real footnotes (with numbers and all!) in Word. Hit the Insert-%26gt;Reference-%26gt;Footnote... menu item. This will not only put an auto-number on the footnote, but it will put a separator between the 'note and the main text and, within reason, will try to keep the entire footnote on the page with the reference.

Note: This is entirely independent of the page footer.
