How do I put a footnote in on Microsoft word?

I need step by step instructions.

Thanks! How do I put a footnote in on Microsoft word?
Word has a very nice footnoting system that will automatically maintain the numbering sequence no matter what you do to the footnotes. It will also do its darnedest to keep the footnotes on the page (and out of the footer, too), as well as give them a format different from the normal text.

To put in a Word footnote (Word XP (2002) and adjacent versions. Word Vista probably has something similar.):

1. Position the cursor where you want the footnote reference to go.

2. Click on the Insert-%26gt;Reference-%26gt;Footnote menu item.

3. Click Insert.

4. Type the footnote.

The footnotes are best viewed in Print Layout view, at least until you get used to how they work.

Click ';view'; on the menu bar (the one at the top of the screen). From the drop down menu select ';header and footer'; and click on it.

The header and footer toolbar opens up. Switch from header to footer by selecting the toolbar box that says ';switch between header and footer';.

Type in what you want. Play about in a blank document for a while it is very intuitive and not difficult to use.

I apologise for misleading you between footnotes and footers when I first answered the question; my fault for not reading the question carefully. Of course the second answerer to your question has it spot on - congratulations.
