What exactly is a footnote and what if i use a source multiple times throughout the paper?

im writing a paper for my government class. we are supposed to use footnotes. i have my source and everything, but how do i write all of the information. is it different than writing a works cited page. what is i use one source through out the whole paper, does the information need to be repeated in the footnotes every time i use the source?//What exactly is a footnote and what if i use a source multiple times throughout the paper?
Basically, a footnote is like a bibliography, but it is placed at the bottom of the page where you use the info (versus at the end of the work like a bibliography). The first time you use your reference, you have to cite the entire source. Last name, first name initial, title (in Italics), publisher, year published, and page number. For example: you cite a quote and place 1 after it. At the bottom of the page you would put 1. Doe, J., How To Write (in italics), New York Press, 2007, page 42. After that, you use the number of your citation, say 2, then you put ibid.(in italics), page #.

So it would be 2. ibid.(in italics), page 65.

And your footnotes continue in number, they don't start back at 1 on a new page. Hope this helps
