How do you get the higher numbers at the end of a sentence for a footnote in a paper?

I'm trying to write a paper and I can't figure out how to get the little numbers that go at the end of the sentence to reference back to a footnote. I know how to put a footnote in and whatnot but the little numbers are bugging me!How do you get the higher numbers at the end of a sentence for a footnote in a paper?
If you go to the 'Insert' menu at the top of the page (when your cursor is at the end of the word you want the footnote to go after) and select 'Insert Note' it will ask you if you want it to be a footnote, endnote, whatever. It should also put the little number in for you - it will give you options for what format you want the number to be in, too.How do you get the higher numbers at the end of a sentence for a footnote in a paper?
Easier to just type the number, highlight it, go to font, and check the super script button
