How do you insert a footnote in word when using windows vista?

when using word on windows vista, how do you make a little number which links to a number at the bottom of the document? ive been clicking 'insert cross-reference', then selecting footnote as the cross-reference type, but it wont let me insert the footnote. can anyone tell me what to do?

1. Place Curser where you would like to insert a Foot Note.


2. Select References on Menu Ribbon.

are you using word 2007? cause you just go under 'references' and click 'insert footnote', which is in the second column from the right. if that is not the word you are using, srry i dont know! good luck =)
Click Insert/ look right / header or footer
The operating system (VISTA) doesn't matter. What version of WORD are you using?



OH the foot note button is located in the box with all the fonts and font size. it has a little 2 under the X.
