Neither:


Hitler waged at least two wars in parallel. One for expansion of the German Reich and ';Liebensraum'; and a further war for german ';Racial Purity';, the main victims of which were the Jewish peoples of Europe, though Hitler's racist policies were also directed against the Roma people (who suffered a greater proportionate loss than the Jewish people, though Jews suffered the worst numeric losses) One can conflate together Hitler's imperial expansion and his racist hate in his attitude to Slavic people. Hitler tried to take both their lands and submit the people to virtual slavery.


The atrocities against Jews were, without minimising this horror, compounded by the atrocities against the inhabitants of the invaded and occupied lands of central and eastern Europe and of (what was then) the Soviet Union.


Hiter and his followers almost mystical nationalism and imperialism cannot be seperated from the Nazi hatred against Jews, and the sufferings of the Holocaust and the sufferings of Hitlers other victims hold similar levels of importance.

The Holocaust would not have happened without WW2 but it was a bigger event than just a footnote
