How to put a footnote on word 2007?

When I go to reference and I'm ready to insert the footnote, the option is ';closed';, gray??How to put a footnote on word 2007?
If you've moved the cursor into the page footer to put the footnote there, don't. Word puts footnotes in the space above the footer, and won't position a footnote reference (which is what Word thinks you're trying to do) in the footer.

Do this to put in a footnote, with the reference.

1. Click where you want to put the REFERENCE.

2. Click the Reference tab and the Insert Footnote button. Word will automatically insert the proper footnote reference number, ..., and position the cursor in the footnote area for you to enter the footnote. Note that it's NOT in the footer.

Hope that helps.
