What does the footnote mean in ';All That You Love Will be Carried Away'; by Stephen King?

In his short story ';All That You Love Will be Carried Away,'; Stephen King has a footnote to one of his bathroom scribbles. It reads,

*';To read this you must also look at the exit ramp from the Walton Rest Area back to highway, i.e. at departing transients.';

Does anybody have any idea what this means?What does the footnote mean in ';All That You Love Will be Carried Away'; by Stephen King?
It is meant to mean that you should try and feel the way Alfie Zimmer does as he travels. Loneliness etc.

It is in an odd spot. It's almost like reading the back of a billboard when you pass it.
