I'm having difficulty writing a paper and I am confused over footnotes. I think I pretty much understand them, but would like to get another opinion and more information on them.

a footnote is like when you are writing something and you decide you want to talk more about a specific subject in your writing, but you dont want to go off topic.
i.e. ';The teenager was ambitious* about getting a new car.';
*Ambitious comes from the the prefix ambi- comes from latin meaning both.
