Neither is a footnote to the other. Footnotes, in your sense, are a way of indicating a tangential point in a text without breaking the main narrative.





History is not a text.





If I am writing or considering the history of military strategy in Europe, the Holocaust would be a footnote. If I am writing or considering the history of Jews (or even Gypsies or gays) in Europe, the Holocaust is central, and WWII perhaps a footnote.





Both events are important and crucial to understanding the world today. Whether either is central to a given conversation depends on the topic of the conversation. It is wrong to suggest that to consider the Holocaust is always to be concerned with something not very important.





You can hardly claim that WWII receives too little attention. Both topics are well-covered.
Seeing the German concentration camps as the main event of WWII is just more politically correct revisionism. The concentration camps began receiving communists and Jehovah Witnesses and Catholic Priests as early as 1936 and the Jews in 1942.





WWII had nothing to do with the German concentration camps anymore than slavery had to do with the American civil war.





The killing off of all undesirables in Nazi German, including: homosexuals, insane, Jews, physically deformed and mentally retarded, gypsies, slavs, and others, accelerated during WWII when the Waffen SS was more fully developed and capable of carrying on the political dirty work of the Nazi Party while the German Army carried on the war.





So it isn't so many people who think that WWII was a footnote to the 'Holocaust' (?) as a minority of politically correct revisionists do.
It actually makes sense. The murders in the East had NOTHING to do with the war itself; they were a genocide based on hatred and the Nazi need for ';lebensraum';. The war was a ';cover'; for the killing, but to the S.S. in the camps, there was the war of extermination; precious few saw any combat. And calling it ';war crimes';...well, they had nothing to do with combat. It was murder in hyper-industrial numbers, simply because of miscellaneous accidents of birth.
Wars are ten a penny, and world wars, since 1793, almost the norm. Warfare is, unfortunately, a natural human condition.





Mass murder, happily, is less common and so attracts more attention. The bumping off of 6 million non-combatant ';racial'; enemies and a similar number of equally innocent others is something of a picturesque circumstance, and we should expect it to arouse more comment than just another war.





Unfortunately, 12 million is not a world record. Modern technology makes crime on this scale fairly easy.
